Welcome to all new and returning students! For those of you that aren’t yet familiar with the Presidents Blog, this is where I post periodic updates on the initiatives and activities we are working on in the office. The purpose of this project is to help all members of the college to help build a better understanding of what we do here at the Students’ Association. Over the summer, I’ve been writing updates bi-weekly, but now that school is starting, I will be updating monthly. Keep an eye out at the end of each month for new posts!

In the past two weeks, we’ve been working hard to wrap up as many of our projects as possible to prepare for our transition back to being full time students. Our 2018-2019 Paw Pass contracts are effective starting September 1st. We have many of the same businesses as last year, but we do have some changes and additions to the service this year! Don’t miss out on these awesome discounts, and come down to the SA office (room 413) to get your new Paw Pass sticker. The participating businesses are advertised on posters on campus, as well as in wallet pamphlets that are available in your orientation packs (for new students) or at our office. If you see our VP of Finance, Vrunda, be sure to thank her for her hard work on this project this year! Find more information about the Paw Pass here on our website. 

While walking down the halls, you may notice many beautiful posters advertising our services and upcoming events. Many of these were created for us by our talented VP of Marketing & Events, Shelby. You can also see some of her work on our website, in the day planner (in the form of colouring pages!), on our Instagram, Facebook and Twitter feeds. Follow us on social media, so you can keep up to date with what’s going on in the SA and you’ll be the first to hear about our upcoming events and activities.

Speaking of events, we have plenty coming up in September! To start, we have the Back in the Saddle social on Sept 6th, where we’ll be bringing a mechanical bull on to the dance floor at Houstons. Next will be the Summer Lights Music Festival on Sept 8th, which will be a full day of family friendly music and activities in Princess Park! There’s a special deal for Assiniboine students of only $8 per ticket. The following week we are collaborating with the BU LGBTTQ* Collective to offer some events. The first one on Sept 13 is Drag-U, which is a drag workshop by Acid Betty, happening in the evening here at the Victoria East campus in the Crossroads area. The following day is B-Queer, which is a two-part event that will be hosted at Houstons. The evening will start with a bud, spud, steak style dinner and drag queen bingo hosted by The Sunshine Bunch, and will be followed by a drag show and social featuring Acid Betty. All tickets can be bought from the SA office. Come join us to kick off the school year!

Last but not least, our nominations for general council open on the first day of classes and will be open for two weeks. We have some great things planned for the year, so if you’re interested in being a part of them, please pick up a nomination form! Your time on council will help you gain experience with event planning, provide opportunities for professional development, and help you meet people from all across the college. Not to mention you get paid for your time and efforts! Run for council and maximize your ACC experience.
